According to the North Portslade Community Newsletter (December 2018) a business called Plunge Creations situated at the former Malthouse in Portslade Old Village played a major role in the birth of the very successful   snails.  Sarah Mead, the director, stated they had worked with the creative team of Wild in Art, Martlets’ Snailspace partners, to make a small scale model called a maquette. When the maquette received approval from those involved, the ‘Plunge’ people created  a larger fibreglass model,  which was then despatched to another company that  mass produced the 50 models.
